This famous question/statement is common in regards to cell phone coverage. Not surprisingly, we experience the same struggles in the worship team with competing stage volumes.

What kind of foundation are you building with your team - musically? Too often, when we gather, we are in a rush to play the first note. Drums are all in, guitars blaring, singers are...well, drowned out in the fury. If we take time to lay down the right kind of foundation, a better stalk of music and musicianship will grow.

Listen to what's being played: upon the first note, what is the foundation of the tune? Instead of diving into the abyss of sound, listen to your surroundings. What's going on by means of tempo, key, style and groove?

Think before you play: Instrumentation and arrangement will greatly affect what and how you play/sing. Are there too many guitars already? What is the vocal structure of the song, does it really need another 2nd harmony? What's going on between the keyboard, drummer and bassist? How are the punctuations being synced together?

We all want to be heard, but sometimes the best conversations are those in which you speak less and listen more. Next time your rehearsing with your band, think about what kind of sound coverage you are getting in the room.

"The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out." - Proverbs 18:15
